Buggy Whip Antiques is housed in the quintessential 18th Century New England Factory Building. Its history dates from 1792 and it has never been empty these past 200 plus years.
Neuma Agins and Henry Reeve, the current owners reinvented the factory as a retail marketplace in 1986. It now exists as a major antiques market in the Berkshires, while housing other businesses as varied as making soup and providing broadband internet access. Our latest addition is the HOME IMPROVEMENT CENTER, consisting of cabinet makers, flooring suppliers, upholsterers, carpenters, remodelers, furniture makers and artisans of all descriptions relating to home building, design and furnishings.
Neumas former career as a major knit ware designer took her from LA to Manhattan and then to the Berkshires where she purchased the factory for her rapidly growing sweater business. Rather than turning to China to stay competitive in the cutthroat garment industry, she decided to create a retail oasis in the sleepy village of Southfield MA. Clothing, artisan products, and antiques have been merchandised here since the late 1980s. Eventually antiques became the major draw and in 1993 her now husband Henry, joined the business.
Showcasing the merchandise of some 25 dealers, the marketplace continues to thrive in these challenging times. The merchandise is diverse, with an emphasis on country and painted furniture. Books, jewelry, tools, kitchenware and other small items can be found in every nook and corner. The majority of items cover the time period from mid 19th century to mid 20th century.
